October 9, 2014 -Beautiful Tennessee River

We had a great time in Nashville - rented a car and drove 1.5 hours to get to downtown Nashville for the day. We met Carol Linville (Pere Pointe neighbor who lives in Nashville in the cooler seasons) for lunch and some music in the Honky Tonk in the heart of Nashville. It was great to spend time with Carol, and we very much enjoyed the variety of music performed by the aspiring musicians.

We went to the Country Music Hall of Fame and then to the Grand Ole Opry where we attended the Saturday night live broadcast of the Grand Ole Opry. It was a great variety of performers, but one of our favorites was Kelly Pickler. After the Opry we crossed the street to go to a restaurant/bar to watch the MSU football game. By the time we got back to the marina it was 1:30. Fun day!

On Sunday morning we had breakfast at Pebble Isle and left on our journey for the day. The scenery along the Tennessee River is strikingly beautiful, and it was a great day for traveling. We spent the first night at Double Island, a peaceful spot just off the river and found two fellow Loopers anchored there already...DeDe and Last Mango. The second night we dropped anchor at Dry Creek, just as a thunderstorm struck. We enjoyed a nice dinner and played some cribbage while the storm was taking place around us.

There are so many beautiful anchorages along the Tennessee River and we have barely touched the surface of all the possibilities.

Our next destination was Grand Harbor Marina in Counce, TN. This marina's claim to fame is that it's located at the intersection of the Tennessee River and the Tenn-Tom (Tennessee/Tom Bigbee) waterway. Also, it is located where state lines of Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee intersect. Thus, we could say we were in Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama within a few hour's travel. As usual, we didn't know if we were "coming or going"...but this time "Tennessee? Alabama? Mississippi?"  It's a very large marina where we met up with other Looper friends. Thankfully, we were given one of the best slips in the house...just outside the office and a close walk to the bathroom/shower. We gathered with Looper friends and went to dinner at Freddy T's. Food was delicious and a good time was had by all.

Yesterday we reserved the rental car and six of us went to Shiloh, one of the bloodiest battlegrounds of the Civil War. The tour began with a very thorough, spellbinding movie of this battle which took place over two days, with many lives lost. We then took a tour through the battlegrounds with our car. The entire experience was a chilling revelation of one of the horrific events which took place on our country's soil. It brought to mind how little we were taught in school about the Civil War and how devastating it was to the families of this country.

We are now on our way to Florence, AL where we plan to stay in the marina for one night and visit the home of Helen Keller. If we have better internet reception tonight, we will post pictures from the past few days.
