October 12, 2014 - Joe Wheeler State Park, Rogersville, AL

Had a great day yesterday, leaving Florence, AL around 7:00 a.m. We were traveling with 4 other boats and made it into the Wilson Lock immediately upon arrival, then traveled uneventfully down the river until we reached the second lock - Joe Wheeler - where we also were able to immediately enter and lock through. We arrived at our first big destination, Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville, AL, around 11:00 a.m. where we will spend about 5 days. This is the site of the AGLCA Fall Rendezvous so we have reunited with many of the Looper friends we have made along the way. We are expecting to learn many great tips for the next leg of our journey, as many informational sessions are planned over the next few days.

Last night the Wheeler Yacht Club treated members and Loopers to a fantastic chili dinner and big-screen football television. Unfortunately, and as expected, Michigan State wasn't one of the games being shown. :) We met many more wonderful boaters and connected with Looper friends. What a welcome to Joe Wheeler!!

Today we plan to explore the park and surrounding area on our bikes.

We finally have decent internet service so I will attempt to post some of the pictures we have been collecting along the way.

Scenery like this common along the river...high bluffs and rock walls

Many trees like this along the way, clinging to their roots to stay alive

Scattered sections of homes along the river

...then more bluffs and wilderness
Couldn't resist admiring all the beautiful colors of the layers of rock

Tows & barges much more uncommon in this section of the Tennessee River

In areas where barges are common, these pilings are made available for the barges to tie to and prepare for loading.
Close-up view of the barge moorings
Storm brewing...hoping to reach anchorage area before it hits

Just entering our anchorage at Dry Creek
Safe & sound in Dry Creek...even storms are pretty on the boat!

Heavy rain and thunder kept us inside, so disappointed we couldn't explore with the dinghy
