September 10, 2014 - ON THE RIVER!!!

The weather cleared up this afternoon so we left the marina today around 12:45, hoping to make it as far as Joliet, IL.  Jim checked out the water and river conditions to be sure it would be safe travel and it surely did turn out to be.  We had a fun trip down the river and would have made it to Joliet but the locks at Lockport are closed for the night and won't reopen until noon tomorrow.  O.K. with us, as we are tied to the wall by the lock and plan to have a nice, quiet evening and plan our day for tomorrow.  We found the various charts, chart plotter, iPad Garmin app and Skipper Bob book to be much more than we needed to find our way.  Good to have multiple back-up plans! Another great day!

Departing the harbor area toward the locks.  Much calmer than we anticipated.

Approaching the Chicago lock, which transports boats from Lake Michigan into Chicago River

Approaching the lock...waiting for the green light

In the lock

Leaving the lock

First bridge to go under as we progress through downtown Chicago

Trump Tower, as seen from the river

Fun, taking in all the sights of downtown

One of the many tour boats in downtown

Many bridges to pass under...one for every street. Luckily, high enough that we didn't have to worry about getting under

Leaving the City behind...

Getting into the "not so nice" part of the city...very smelly and polluted once we got out of the main part of the city

Krue, our little guy who loves trucks, tractors, etc...these are for you!

First of many train tracks over the river

Our first tow encounter

Now into more natural landscape along the river, rather than industrialization

Seems desolate, but it's not...just a quiet stretch of the river

Confluence of the Cal-Sag & the Chicago Sanitary Shipping Canal (Chicago River)

Trying to keep the Asian Carp out of Lake Michigan

Enbridge Energy High Pressure Petroleum Aerial Pipeline...dedicated to son Dave, who works for Enbridge

Looks like the Arch in St. Louis but it's really a pipeline

No dipping toes in the water here!!! Asian Carp, beware!

  1. 7 am Thurs morning and I'm sitting here with a cup of coffee catching up on your travels the past few days. Great fotos and commentary; exceeded my expectations of what this blog would look like. Very interesting for family/friends to read, and it certainly must be interesting for you to create each day. See any Asian carp now that you are past Chicago? Posted by Ron Beeber
